Make Your Hot Tub Cover Last Longer
Jan 10
When maintaining the water in your spa or hot tub there are a few things that you want to watch for to prolong the life of your hot tub cover. The most common reasons hot tub covers don’t last is chemical damage, by following these simple guidelines you can vastly improve the life of your spa cover. Proper water balance will ensure user comfort, water clarity, spa sanitizer efficiency and longevity of the spa cover.
Check the water in your spa every few days with test strips or a test kit. The first thing you want to check is your Alkalinity as that helps to balance your PH levels. Your total Alkalinity should range from 125-150ppm (parts per million) Your PH levels should range between 7.2-7.6 as well. You don’t want your water to be too acidic or too alkaline as that can cause erosion to the plastic barrier protecting your hot tub cover inserts.
Next is your sanitizer, this should only range from 3-5ppm. The sanitizer is meant to kill bacteria in your hot tub or spa but if the levels are too high and left too high it will cause more chemical damage to the hot tub cover and the barrier protecting your inserts. If you notice the sanitizer levels are high add more water to the hot tub or spa to dilute the sanitizer a bit or do a partial drain and fill with fresh water.
When shocking your spa it is very important that the cover be completely removed for 20-60minutes or until the level has come down. Shocking burns contaminants in the water and can cause your cover to erode if left trapped between the water and the cover.
Another big problem for hot tub covers is ozonators. With an ozonator your spa is pumping that chemical into the water. That ozone will become trapped in the cover and eat away at it as it has nowhere else to go but up. You should remove the cover at least every other day and let this air out. Even if you just crack the lid open with something for about 20 min this will allow the chemicals out so they are not trapped and eating your spa cover.
Make sure to clean your hot tub cover of debris and wash it down often to keep it looking and working at its best. When cleaning the spa cover you should only use products like our 303 hot tub cover cleaner as many products such as armoural will make your hot tub cover brittle.
